Moffet the red squirrel children's book character

Finding Moffet.

The Origin Story

Some stories take 15 years to tell.

Many years ago, I spent a summer working in the South of France. I rented a little bungalow in Antibes with floor-to-ceiling shutters that opened out onto a wrap-around porch. Every morning and late afternoon, I’d throw open the shutters, sit outside with a book, and listen to the pine trees fill with the sound of crickets. They’d start up the moment the temperature hit 28 degrees. What a racket. What a wonderful racket.

And almost every day, she’d appear.

A little red squirrel, scampering up and down the pine trees, nibbling on things, and pausing every so often to look at me with those bright, curious eyes. I started saying good morning and good afternoon to her. I’d ask her how her day had gone. Watching her dart through the garden and imagining all the little adventures she must have been having.

I called her Moffet.

I never forgot her. And after getting distracted with corporate life for 15 years, she finally became the brave little red squirrel at the heart of the Moffet Books series, full of curiosity, courage, heart and adventure.

Every book started with that little squirrel in a French garden, so many years ago. It feels great to finally share her.

Every story carries something extra. In Moffet and the Zoo Trip, Moffet discovers what it means to need to be brave. Moffet and the Rescue Mission, the most important thing turns out to be listening before you jump in. Moffet and the Golden Acorn is a story about sharing, and Moffet and Noodle gently remind us never to judge before we really know someone.

Big ideas, told simply. Just the way children like them.

Meet the Author.

After a long career helping people, through service, leadership and teaching, M.A. McAlpine returned to a lifelong passion for storytelling. Drawing on a wealth of real-world experience, the Moffet Books series was born from a simple belief: that the world is still full of wonder, and children deserve stories that celebrate it.

It started with a real red squirrel in a French garden. It grew into a world and keeps growing.
